A podcast about gender and equality in Sápmi

Concepts connected to gender equality such as gender, queer, feminism, masculinity, are words that express a political will to treat individual people equally, regardless of identities and definitions.

“To you, young men and women, I would like to say a word. Our people's future lies in your hands.

Therefore, come forward, brothers and sisters from the Swedish side of Sápmi, to work for the oppressed; acquire all the education you can get, support the weak in the struggle for existence and think about our future goal!

To you, our old, hardened by adversity. Not a single Sámi must be missing from our society.”

This writes Elsa Laula in 1904 in the pamphlet Within Life or Death? True words about Lapp conditions. In her perspective, gender and generations were a part of developing and strengthening our society. This is also a way to understand Sámi equality.

In this podcast, the Saami Council and Suoma Sámiid Guovddášsearvi explore how we talk about gender equality, and how to raise the topic in public conversations.

The podcast is hosted by Anne Wuolab. The technical production is done by Forest People.

Intromusic: Alex MakeMusic - Good Days.

To keep a siida contains many tasks that need to be done in collaboration between everyone, and as such has been seen as being gender equal work. But today there are tasks that are seen as being men’s work and women’s work, and gender equality has halted within reindeer herding.

Marianne Ketola works as a reindeer herder and belongs to Giehtaruohtas bálgos, or reindeer herding district, on the Finnish side of Gárasavvon. She also works for Sámi duodji. She was one of the participants in the Knowledge hub on gender, which discussed equality within reindeer husbandry.
